SERVING – USING YOUR GIFTS TO BUILD HIS CHURCH
Serving God at Emmanuel Church goes way beyond attending Sunday gatherings, participating in Growth Groups or supporting the activities of the church. As a community, we realise that each of us has been given unique gifts and talents that can be used to build His church and His kingdom, so that we may come to KNOW CHRIST and to MAKE CHRIST KNOWN to others for the glory of God.
Emmanuel Church offers many opportunities to serve and we would encourage you to seek out and commit to an opportunity through which you can bring glory to God.
“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first, must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:44-45.
We exist to glorify God through reaching unsaved people and by providing what is spiritually necessary to grow our congregation in Christ. That is, to KNOW CHRIST and to MAKE CHRIST KNOWN.
Taking God’s Word into the world requires a wide range of resources, from buildings, facilities and training materials to a dedicated community of people who are committed to Christ. For our church to operate effectively, we not only need to commit to using our gifts and talents in His church, but we also need to commit in some way to financing God’s work for the extension of His kingdom.
While the Old Testament refers to ‘tithing’ in response to God’s blessings, the New Testament does not refer to a tithe, but provides several guidelines for giving, including Paul’s words with regard to a collection for the poor and needy of Jerusalem: “On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come, no collections will have to be made”. 1 Cor 16:2.
- What can you do?
Seeking God’s will for our lives should at all times provide the foundation for all that we do. Pray for our church, our leadership, our ministries and our outreach programmes.
Our church is a community and an opportunity for committed partnerships with fellow members. Attend worship regularly, share through our Growth Groups and actively participate in the activities of our church.
Our church undertakes many forms of ministry and outreach to enable us to KNOW CHRIST and to MAKE CHRIST KNOWN. Each of us has been blessed with particular abilities and talents – seek out opportunities to use these within the church and its community.
Sharing your life and faith with others will enable you to share what God is doing at Emmanuel Church. Find ways to partner not only with the local church membership, but also with our missionaries as they take God’s Word into the world.
Emmanuel Church is able to bring God’s Word into our lives, the lives of our loved ones and the broader communities in which we live. Support the church’s efforts to KNOW CHRIST and to MAKE CHRIST KNOWN by committing to a giving decision that honours God and is right for you.
Emmanuel Church welcomes both members and adherents and while most of the benefits of formal membership are available to everyone, we would encourage you to consider formal membership of our church.
Formal membership not only extends your participation in the church by enabling you to play a direct role in shaping our ministries, but it also represents a ‘public’ commitment to both the church community and its work in taking God’s Word into the world.
- You have the opportunity to help shape not only the overall ministry to the congregation, but also the various ministries and programmes through which the church enables members to engage with one another and to reach out into the world at large. Only members of our church may nominate and vote for Council members, have a formal say at our Annual Vestry Meeting or lead ministries in the church.
- You are generally more likely to play the kind of church role the Bible describes for Christians: you’ll guard against being an independent Christian (Matt 18:15-17, Heb 13:17); you’ll have greater opportunities to use spiritual gifts (1Cor 12, Eph 4); you’ll openly demonstrate the reality of the Body of Christ (1Cor 12:27); you’ll encourage new believers to a proper commitment to the local body (Heb 10:24).
